...and I don't like it.
He isn't the first, and I doubt he will be the last; but it seriously bothers me when Professors and other figures of authority - especially in an educational institution - use profanity. Now, just so we're clear, he isn't cursing at his students - I wouldn't be havin' that. Rather, he just uses profanity in his speech. Is it necessary?
By no means am I gonna sit here and act like I haven't used a profane word in my life. Hell, I've probably used them in this blog already. But if you're supposed to be a teacher, a mentor, a professional, then I'm gonna have a hard time accepting that you are one, and treating you as such if you're cursing as you give your lecture.
I'm not sure if older professors think that its cool to do it in order to win "popular" points with students, but - in my book - you're only loosing points. Especially if it sounds forced.
There . is . nothing . worse . than . someone . who . tries . to . curse .
So professors, please. If you don't use profanity, then don't start for the sake of the students. The fact that you can convey a point to your students without profanity is admirable. And if you do use profanity, try to monitor when you do it, and never do it directly at a student. It's not a good look.
Class dismissed.
